1. At Neal, driving a stake 18 inches in the ground is not considered an excavation.
2. Excavation and trenching work done at depths greater than 48 inches are considered confined spaces which requires a Confined Space Entry Permit to be issued and the Neal Typical Excavation Inspection Checklist to be completed by the designated competent person.
3. A trench is a narrow excavation (in relation to its’ length) made below the surface of the ground. In general, the depth greater than the width, but the width of a trench (measured at the bottom) is not greater than ___ feet.
4. When excavation becomes necessary the engineer or supervisor in charge of the excavation shall have the underground lines marked by highly visible paint on the ground or by stakes driven in the ground directly above the underground line.
5. Inspections shall be conducted and documented by a competent person prior to start of work, after every rainstorm or other hazard increasing occurrence, and as needed throughout the job. The contractor performing the work is responsible for providing the Competent Person.
6. All excavations over ___ feet in depth must be shored, sloped, or shields provided to protect workers against the possibility of a cave-in.
7. The type of shoring is dependant upon soil type and soil conditions. At the Neal Plant, all soil will be considered Class “____” soil.
8. Trenches more than 20 feet in length must have two or more ladders spaced such that no more than 25 feet of lateral travel is required for workers.
9. No person is permitted to work underneath loads handled by lifting or digging equipment. Personnel are required to stand away from any vehicle being loaded or unloaded to avoid being struck by any spillage or falling materials.
10. All open excavations must be protected against the likelihood of people or equipment falling into them. The barricade shall be clearly visible and enclose the excavation so that personnel will not fall into the excavation. Warning signs must be posted. Lights on overnight barricades are optional.
